Harvard’s Department of Anthropology describes their Social Anthropological Graduate Program as:
The field of social/cultural anthropology is changing rapidly in response to economic and political developments in the post-Cold War world…”
I couldn’t help but wonder how Social Media has played a role in breaking down the walls between cultures. I was reminded of this as I stumbled upon a simple flash website called The Fitness Republic of China. The site itself is a constant reminder of how technology opens windows into worlds and cultures to people who may have never been exposed to them otherwise. While the 60 year old woman exercising in China may never use the Internet a day in her life, her routines have been documented and shared on platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, where clusters of networks pass information across nodes of friends, fans and followers.
The world is getting smaller, and this is a reminder of that.
