Imagine being 9 years old. You’re playing the xylophone in your music class and by some chance it’s recorded on a teacher’s flip video camera and uploaded to Youtube. In 1 week’s time that video has been seen almost a quarter million times.
The kids who take part in Chorus at Staten Island’s PS22 experience that multiple times a year. Conductor Gregg Breinberg figured out the secret of social media by giving his students a voice through their interpretations of popular songs that they sing at home anyway. Bringing them into the classroom and then sharing them with the world though is groundbreaking.
PS22 Chorus is audition based and the 5th graders who participate are all exceedingly talented.
